Brian McCarthy’s reputation as a “Gentleman Contractor” captures the thoughtful approach he brings to what can often be a messy, disruptive process. “We know how invasive, unpleasant, dusty and noisy construction can be. We take extra steps to make every job site clean and organized.”

A skilled carpenter and licensed contractor since 1993, Brian brings a wealth of experience, a solid work ethic and a host of trusted subcontractors to every job, whether it’s a bathroom remodel or a new home. He is particularly adept at remodeling historic homes, where his thoughtful research and scrupulous eye for detail distinguish him from other contractors.

Clients love having him around the house, not only because he gets the job done cleanly, professionally and on time—but also because his bids are spot on, his pricing is reasonable, and he invests himself in every job, regardless the scope.

Tip: Don’t hire your gardener to do your remodel. Cheaper isn’t better. Get multiple bids on a project from similarly qualified and properly insured contractors, then let your instincts rather than the bottom line tell you whom to work with.

I initially called Brian because I needed a minor bath renovation. We live in a 100-year old house that had been renovated multiple times before we bought it. The house is impeccable and I didn’t want to hire just anyone. Brian left a leaflet at my house and it was so professionally done that I called him. He is well spoken, highly professional, as are all the people who work with him.

We wanted it to be more of a California house—bright and where you can see the back yard from inside the house. We had three fireplaces in the house. One was in family room, but we didn’t use it so we knocked out one fireplace and replaced it with sliding glass doors. We are very happy with the results. The subcontractors Brian used for replacing the driveway, the hardscape in the backyard, laying the sod, etc., did it all well. He has since done multiple jobs for me.

In our kitchen, he designed and built a beautiful bamboo banquet. His specialty is definitely carpentry, but he can do anything. We’ve had him do some handyman type work, too. He has done minor projects such as painting (he does it very well). He never hires anyone who doesn’t speak English and everyone he brings in has a lot of respect for your house. They even take their shoes off when coming in.

Regarding his pricing, I’m not kind of person to simply take the lowest bid. In my experience it is not the way to get the best job. Brian gave me a good idea of the costs and stayed within his bid. The bid did increase, but only because I added things.

He stuck close to the timeline, too. In a lot of these projects, you never know what you are going find when you knock down walls—and ours is a 100-year old house. It went on longer than I hoped, but it had nothing to do with Brian. You can’t control some of that.

Brian was always reachable. Anytime I called Brian, he picked up his cell.

Brian is not cheap, but you get what you pay for. I never wanted him to cut corners and his prices seemed reasonable. I asked around about pricing and knew I was not getting ripped off. He and his guys are very professional. They are highly skilled and are not working for $10 an hour. It is a tough economy, and I want people to make a fair wage.

Brian is smart. I consider him a peer. He is not a rough and tumble contractor. It seems to me like he fits the neighbor2neighbor criteria very well.

I have known Brian for at least the last decade. He has done two remodels for me; one in the late 90's and then one just recently. These were both substantial projects and I was very pleased with the quality of the jobs. I feel comfortable with Brian and his crew around; he has a key to my home so they can all come and go, as needed.
Brian is responsible, responsive and trustworthy. He arrives early, stays late and accommodates my schedule. He prides himself on delivering a top-quality job on time and on budget.

I was a prior client of Brian's, having worked with him on another job years ago. I did not consider any other contractors because I am familiar with his work and trust his consistency. He did extremely impressive detail work on our older, historic home. He has a wide range of skills, from modern to old school detail. He insured that the architectural integrity of our home stayed intact. Another plus with Brian is that he figures out how to get a job done; he is able to understand, interpret and communicate what needs to be done to me and to his crew. Brian and his crew are thorough and punctual, while consistently creating historical detail. They are also incredibly clean and courteous. The ultra-fine quality of his work matches my ideal.

Though we had no need for any follow-up, he is easily accessible and readily willing to communicate when necessary. I appreciate his conservative work-style. He is never aggressive. His quote and budget are realistic and when unforeseen challenges arise, he offers reasonable alternative options. Because I know his work and trust him, I call Brian when a job really matters. He is on my contractor "A List."

Brian is a longtime, childhood friend of mine and I highly respect his work ethic and attention to detail. He completely renovated our master bath and did a great job! He is from the top drawer, has a stand-up, all bonded crew, and runs a tight ship. He is a stickler regarding the law and workman's comp. His prices were right in-line with today's market and we paid what we expected to pay. Brian is incredibly conscientious, got the job done in a timely fashion and any adjustments that needed to be made were efficiently taken care of, immediately.
- Mickey M., Cheviot Hills

Brian was recommended to us by a person we worked with on our landscaping. We got four bids and references. All the bids were similar so we checked out Brian's references, which were all very good. We went with him because he felt the most comfortable to work with. He walked us through the entire process. He did a full-on kitchen remodel, taking our old kitchen in our old house and bringing it up to today's standards. It is beautiful! Although the budget went up a bit, it is because we decided to do some upgrades. Brian is responsive and easy to contact by phone and email. He offers great customer service. Most of all I want to stress his professionalism. All and all it was a very good experience. We are happy and would use him again.

Brian was referred to us by a friend whose husband is a glass contractor and who had worked with Brian in the past. Our friend also had known Brian personally for many years. Although he was used to doing much larger projects, because of today's market, he was open to smaller projects like ours. We had plans to remodel our home, but then decided to sell it and move out of the LA area, so we scaled down the remodel project to put the house on the market.

I am an engineer and an architect so I have a working knowledge of this process. I do high-end work and Brian was extremely easy to work with. He listened to me and understood what I wanted. He was then able to convey this to his crew. We did multiple projects: repainted inside and out, replaced flooring, laid a marble counter top and repaired a shower. On our fireplace surround, he replaced the antique tiles, matching them perfectly. His subcontractors can do it all!

Everything we asked for, Brian did to the standard we expected. I worked with some of his men daily, and some of it was tedious work, though still always top quality. We then had him work on our new home in Santa Barbara, turning a powder room into a pantry and replacing a garage door. It sounds like handyman work, but it was much more. He took small jobs to a higher level, much of it artisan work.

While I do not profess to have a working knowledge of his technical experience, I cannot say enough about his honesty and integrity. He did what he said he was going to do, when he said he was going to do it. He and his crew and his subs were always on time and within budget. If I called him with a concern, he was all over himself to meet my expectations. Because this is my business, too I have no hesitation recommending him to anyone. Anyone is lucky to have Brian on their job!

- Andrew Oakley, Hollywood

Brian's father was a friend of my family so I knew a little about him and his work because of that connection. He also does his own design work, is very good at it, actually, and that saved us some money right from the start of our numerous projects. He stayed close enough to the original budget and anything over that, we approved ahead of time. He worked on our kitchen, installing a marble slab and working on major plumbing and wiring. We upgraded exterior plaster, trim and windows. We also did a complete garage remodel, including part of the driveway. Brian isn't cheap but for the value of our house and the quality of his work, he gave top value for the money. When I called with a concern, he followed up promptly. Brian is conscientious, personable and has a great reputation and rapport with the city inspectors. He does all his work according to the rules and regulations.
