- 10. Private school tuition savings of a half a million dollars (a quarter of a million dollars compounded over 13 years).
- 9. Solution to gnawing parental fear that, growing up in Los Angeles, one’s children will become too materialistic ("But dad – in 10th grade EVERYONE drives a Hummer!").
- 8. Public school kids, too, go on to Harvard (Stanford, Yale, UC Berkeley, etc.). Granted, in Los Angeles, some of them are 16 year-old Russian girls in Reseda with perfect SAT’s and no social life (we did say Reseda), but that is a problem for another day.
- 7. In an increasingly global economy, there’s no better place on earth than the Los Angeles public schools to be exposed to new cultures and new languages.
- 6. Los Angeles offers an almost dizzying wealth of public school choice via magnet schools, charter schools, neighborhood schools, gifted programs, schools for advanced studies, etc. Confused? See #1 below.
- 5. Public education = free government stuff. For instance, the LAUSD has the largest instrument repair shop on the planet and a s**tload of upright pianos: they’d love schools to take them off their hands, you need only call!
- 4. Public school parents are unusually chic, soulful, and attractive, and find that one week without carbs and the weight falls right off them.
- 3. It’s the democracy, stupid.
- 2. By that we mean that Thomas Jefferson believed that public education is the cornerstone of a vital democracy, and hence public schools are part of the great work of America.
- 1. Because Los Angeles is such a great city, your Magnet Yentas are standing by with helpful info and (the American dream of) icy cocktails. . . always free.
Martinis and Magnets Mission Statement
Martinis and Magnets was created by writers (and LAUSD mothers) Sandra Tsing Loh and Christie Mellor. Back in 2005, they realized: 1) Many L.A. parents were confused about to how to apply to L.A. area Magnet schools 2) The Magnet point system was complex 3) So complex that for some, vodka would be needed.
Our free public events occur at selected L.A. neighborhood venues during Magnet application season (September through January).
