“Stone speaks to me and tells me where it wants to go,” says longtime stonemason, Rick Reid. If you’re looking for meticulously crafted masonry at a reasonable price, you’ll want to call Rick for a free estimate. Working one job at a time, he’ll give your project his full attention, and his skill with all types of stonework is unrivaled.
When Rick first worked on a construction crew in 1978, he watched a crew of masons build a stone wall. “It was mesmerizing. It hooked me.” Rick can work with any kind of stone in any kind of style (precision, elegant or rustic), and he relishes the satisfaction of doing a nice block job, where everything is laid out straight and true.
But where Rick really comes alive is with his signature whimsical style. The work he does with river rock can turn any yard into a picture from a storybook. Whether it’s a retaining wall, a flagstone pathway or a bathroom floor, all of Rick’s work has aesthetic energy and proportion, with no stone out of place. The joints are always clean and the drainage is perfectly planned.
Rick’s bids are more than fair, considering the time and care he personally puts into every project. He lives by his motto, “Your work is your signature.” This means Rick Reid’s good name and reputation are set in stone.
Tip: Get at least three contractors to give you estimates, and then go and check their contractor’s licenses with the California State Contractor’s Licensing Board to make sure they’re legit.
I found Rick from a business card he had left at Jacobi's. It was one of the best accidents in my life. He would be at home with the European artists of another century. His skill, attention to detail, and conceptual artistry is unbelievable. He is prompt, clean, personable and just a great guy all around. I cannot praise him too much or too often. If you don't use him, you are missing out on a fabulous experience. Don't bother with bids from anyone else - get Rick. He's worth it at any price.

Rick did all of the stonework in my yard. He built a custom fireplace, and retaining areas. It was all exterior work, all in stone and very detailed. He was very good at the creative aspect. He was also very diligent. As far as customer service, he was always on time, pleasant to deal with, and was cautious about things like leaving the gates closed so the dogs wouldn’t get out. I would use him over and over!
He builds custom stuff so it’s not like building with linear lines. He isn’t cheap, but neither was he the most expensive. It all depends on what you are doing. Rick does all of his own cutting, designing and shaping, and that can be more costly. He is definitely a good value for the money paid—well worth it.

Rick built a very large patio in our backyard. He laid the slab then put slate over it. He removed a built-in barbecue that was already there and built a new one in a different location. He covered it all with rock, including planters and steps. I was so pleased! Then in the front yard he did the same thing to a long walkway, coming up from the street onto the porch. We had two large decorative pillars that he covered with the same rock and added lights on the top. He was very meticulous, fitting everything together so that it looks like it was always that way, with no gaps or holes in-between. He cuts the rock to fit together tightly. It was so impressive that, when we had a painter here doing some work, the painter asked for Rick's card. Rick is all about doing it right. If it is not up to his standard/if he is not happy with it, he will tear it out and do it over. He even did the conduit for the lighted pillars and dug the trench from the meter for the gas line to the barbeque. It's one-stop-shopping with Rick Reid. Full service, done right. Very impressive!

I first learned about Rick Reid in the late 70's or early 80's. When he did our first driveway with Stonecraft, he was the brother of a coworker. Two years later he extended that driveway and added brick flowerbeds. His work was phenomenal and done in good time. In 1983 he laid a slab for our motor home in the back yard. Later he extended that slab and bricked in more flowerbeds for us. In the Northridge earthquake we lost all the brick walls. Rick redid them all, eight inches thick, five eights inch rebar with a 16 by 16 foot footing. He did such a good job at such a fair price, my neighbor had him do the same thing. In 2000 we put in wrought iron fencing in the back and Rick put in matching brick pillars every eight feet. I occasionally run over the bricks lining the driveway and Rick replaces them, free of charge. We then bought a property on a hill that had experienced years of neglect and deterioration. He hauled off four dumpsters of rock and dirt. Rick put in over 100 feet of drains and a French drain below. It is still working flawlessly. He added a three-foot retaining wall all around the house, too. The quality of his work and his dedication to detail sets him apart from other contractors, and his pricing is fair and competitive. He has an artistic eye and creative ideas. What he does always matches, and looks as if it was always there. I actually carry his cards with me because people see his work at my house and want to know who did it. I'm glad to refer Rick Reid to anyone.

I met Rick 15 or 20 years ago, and he is one of only five contractors that we invite to our company Christmas party. That's a big deal! He did work on our own building, too. Rick is very meticulous, maybe to a fault. I think he might sometimes lose money by being such a perfectionist. He is also very honest and on time. He guarantees his work and does what he says he will do. He has never owed our company money, and I never hesitate to recommend him to anyone. I wish all our contractors were like Rick. He never takes on more than he can handle and always does the work right the first time around. That is so important in this industry. He's just a big teddy-bear kind of a guy, great to be around!

I saw Rick working in the neighborhood and had him do some work for me. He has been working on my property for over six years now. He has done extensive work for me: retaining walls and other kinds or walls, stone-paved surfaces, walkways and pathways, all of excellent quality. Everything he has done for me has been pretty damn good, and his prices are fair and reasonable. Rick is honest, on time and easy to get a hold of. I saw some stone and brick work at his own home, too. He has an artistic eye. I have always gotten what I wanted with him. I would not continue to use him if I wasn't pleased.

Rick and I belong to the same organization, and we got into a conversation about what he did for a living. We kept in touch and when I needed a job done, I gave him a call. Over the years he has taken care of whatever we needed. For instance, we wanted a decorative wall to hold our mailbox to be built at the foot of our driveway. Our neighbors had nice mailboxes and the front of our house looked rather bleak. I was thinking of something rather simple and functional, but Rick had some great ideas for a two-foot curved brick wall that includes places to plant flowers on it and a pillar to hold the mailbox. What he came up with matches the stone we already have in our yard—it’s very imaginative and looks great! In our backyard he moved a large planter with huge stones. It was just not in the right place before, and now it looks like it has always been there. He also added a buried drain with a grate so the water, when it rains, won't flood our side patio. He is so skillful! He is always on time and full of creative suggestions. I have had nothing but good experiences with Rick Reid. He is a treasure!

Rick was recommended to me by Jacobi Building Materials, on Van Owen. I purchased my materials at Jacobi’s. I checked out Rick’s website and was very impressed. He applied a stone face to the bottom half of the front of my house. His prices were reasonable and he did not try to nickel and dime me to death. Rick was always on time, with an early start. He really loves his work and is a stickler for doing it right the first time. He is very knowledgeable about the products he works with, and I was also impressed with his honesty. He went out of his way to suggest ways to save me money during the process. He had good ideas and was sensitive to not over-build for my area. I have future work for him and will be calling him back.
